The House of Mouse is an integral part of our childhoods, and their fantastically memorable songs are a huge part of what makes those wonderful memories. Years later, all it takes is a couple of chords and you’ll be belting out the songs perfectly- probably with a few key dance moves added for fun! We’ve rounded up the best 7 songs from Disney’s classic repertoire- which is your favorite?
1. Kiss the Girl ( The Little Mermaid)
Via Disney
Ok, ok, this one does have a couple of lyrics that haven’t aged well (‘ It don’t take a word...go on and kiss the girl) . But c’mon. With the catchy Bohemian-inspired steel drums, and bouncy, rhythm-driven lyrics, who can say this one doesn’t get their toes tapping? And there’s a blessed simplicity, a call-back to when a ‘kiss’ from your favorite someone was the most exciting thing ever to happen to you. It’s a breezy, upbeat classic that pulls on our heartstrings and brings back all the nostalgia- what’s not to like?
2. Hakuna Matata ( The Lion King)
Via Disney
Talking about nostalgic riffs that pull you back into the happy days of youth, there’s Hakuna Matata. Those iconic plinking open notes and jazz overtones have made this Disney jingle so much more than just another catchy song. This ‘90s Disney classic was the original meme, the birth of YOLO, and the catchphrase that buoyed the spirit of a generation. Worry less, kick back, and relax....maybe it’s time to bring this one back to brighten up everyone’s days! The music video is a stunner, too.
3. Beauty and the Beast/Tale as old as time ( Beauty and the Beast )
Via Disney
This one’s a tale as old as time of its own accord! From the comforting round shape of Mrs. Potts, the only teapot to dance her way into our hearts, to the aching romance of the love affair between Belle and her Beast, this is one of the most beautiful songs ever to come out of the Disney catalog. We wouldn’t be surprised if you felt a tear in the corner of your eyes just thinking about it! This gliding melody worked its way into our heart with the unbeatable silky voices of Angela Lansbury and Peabo Bryson, and it will never, ever be unseated as one of the most romantic songs ever written.
4. Heigh-ho ( Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs)
Via Disney
While we’re sure you wish you didn’t have to drag yourself to work every morning, this stirring march is sure to make you feel better about it! The film may be super old now, having debuted in 1937, but this catchy, jolly working stiff’s anthem will fire up your blood and leave you wanting to get down to work, no matter where you are or what you do. This is probably the very first Disney hit song on our list, and it’s one almost no one- even the youngest among us- could fail to recognize, earning it a spot on the list
5. Colors of the Wind ( Pocahontas )
Via Disney
From stirring work-vibes to a romantic sigh for a simpler earth and the beauty around us. Despite its environmentalist overtones, this song manages to teach respect for the living land around us and carry a catchy tune. This melody swoops like a swallow and dives like an eagle, and you’ll find yourself singing along with joy and a tear in your eye. There’s nothing to not love about this heart-warming classic.
6. A whole new world ( Aladdin)
Via Disney
Another romance written forever on our hearts in tears of joy. Don’t you dare close your eyes, whispers an entire generation whose hearts were won over by the most romantic PG-rated song in the world. Even the mostly disappointing live-action version of this Disney Classic couldn’t wreck the romance. The film overall has wormed its way into our hearts forever, carried on the back of a stellar vocal performance from beloved comedian Robin Williams, but this song will forever stand out even from its magical companions as the love song to conquer the world.
7. Let it Go! ( Frozen )
Via Disney
We couldn’t possibly finish the list without adding this modern Disney hit to the list. Don’t roll your eyes- maybe you’ve got little ones of your own and you’re a little, ‘Let it Go’-ed to death, but you have to admit this is an amazing all-rounder of a song that has a little bit of everything. Soaring key changes, a big, beautiful voice belting out inspiration in the way only Disney can... it’s already a classic and it’s not going to be unseated. Sure, maybe it’s a little too new (with its 2013 release date) to elicit immediate nostalgia like the others, but this song’s got the grit and the beauty to stick around for the long haul. Generations from now, they’ll still be singing it (just like Heigh-ho has stood the test of time) and the uplifting message, matched up with Idina Menzel’s remarkable voice, will keep this one on the lists of Disney’s most inspiring songs forever.
